OUR STORY
AFMX: A History of Harmony
Founded in 2013 by AFME Board President Ivan Wiener, with the support of Robert Redford and Sibylle Szaggars-Redford, the Albuquerque Film & Music Experience (AFMX) has become a significant force in New Mexico's creative economy.
Initially conceived as the Albuquerque Film and MEDIA Experience, AFMX brought creatives together in Nob Hill. Inspired by Albuquerque’s vibrant music scene, Wiener shifted the focus from "Media" to "Music," celebrating the equal importance of film and music for twelve years. This emphasis fostered connections between industry leaders and local talent, contributing significantly to the local economy. AFMX’s dedication to quality has consistently earned it recognition as one of the top 100 best-rated festivals worldwide by FilmFreeway.
Under the leadership of Executive Director Kira Sipler, the AFME Foundation is expanding its reach, providing valuable resources and opportunities to both aspiring and established filmmakers and musicians. AFMX continues to champion the symbiotic relationship between film and music, recognizing their intertwined nature in various forms, from film scoring and music videos to screenplays and songwriting. The festival is committed to showcasing talent, supporting professional development, teaching the business of film and music, and empowering individual artists.
AFMX’s commitment to both film and music highlights their interconnectedness and celebrates artistry in both fields. Albuquerque's rise as a leading film and TV production hub has fueled the city's economic growth. While New Mexico’s stunning landscapes and reliable sunshine have long attracted filmmakers, competitive costs and generous incentives have solidified the city and state's appeal. Complementing this thriving film industry is Albuquerque's diverse and dynamic music scene, reflecting the city's rich cultural heritage. From traditional Pueblo music and Hispanic and Latin rhythms to the sounds of local bands, Albuquerque's music offers something for everyone, showcasing the city's diverse cultural tapestry.
